With local control, nothing happens – your system keeps running independently in the house. That's the big advantage over pure cloud solutions, where devices become useless the moment the provider discontinues the service. Home Assistant runs on a small computer in your home; lights, heating and scenes are switched directly on the local network. Even if a single device loses its cloud, the rest of the control stays intact. So your investment and comfort don't depend on whether a corporation abroad keeps a service running.

Often not. Much can be retrofitted and integrated into Home Assistant without replacing everything. Devices from different brands – Philips Hue, IKEA, Shelly, Sonos, FRITZ! or smart thermostats – end up in a single interface on phone and tablet. The connection runs over Zigbee, Matter, Thread or Wi-Fi depending on the device, so structural work is usually not needed. In the initial call I tell you honestly what integrates easily and what is worth replacing – for example devices that only work through a foreign cloud.

You only need internet for certain extras, such as weather data or remote access. I set up that remote access securely and without a foreign cloud on request – for example over an encrypted tunnel (VPN) straight to your system.

On your own hardware at home or on a server in Switzerland – your choice. Your pictures and documents don't quietly flow to a US corporation. I set up a 3-2-1 backup from the start – three copies, two media types, one off-site – on ZFS storage that detects and repairs silent data errors before a photo breaks. No monthly subscription, no fee to download your own files.

I handle the automation, configuration and all plug-in and low-voltage components (Zigbee, Matter, PoE, sensors) myself. Fixed 230 V mains work is done by a licensed electrician from my network, with a proper safety certificate. Cleanly separated, all legal.
